18 Items To Prepare For Winter Emergencies

Snow in northwest ohio

My oldest son and his girlfriend were on the way to work when she had an accident. No one was hurt. As she was trying to turn the car around. But could not tell where the business driveway was at and where the yard or road ended. They were stuck. A tow truck was called in to get them unstuck. They were luckily able to drive away with the car.

The tow truck took a half hour to get them pulled out. During that time they stood outside in the cold. My son had a thin jacket on with steel toe boots. The girlfriend had a thin hoodie on. Neither was dressed for the weather. The girlfriend told us as soon as she got back in the car, she took her shoes off to warm up her feet in front of the heater. Can you imagine how bad it could have been if the tow truck driver would have taken an hour or longer, instead of a half hour, while they stood out in the cold?

My son went to work while the girlfriend stayed back to have the car looked at. When she went to back out of her driveway. It would not back out and stopped. She shut the car off and restarted it. It drove okay. She decided to take it to a local mechanics shop to have it checked. They found a bunch of loose stuff on the front end but nothing broke. The place tightened everything that was loose. She was able to go on her way. So far so good, no other problems.

Buds on a tree and snow falls

Living in Northwest Ohio you never know what the weather will be one day to the next in the winter and spring. Within the last week, we had warm temperatures, which turned to rain, which turned to snow. temperatures go up and down. You need to be prepared in case of an emergency. Otherwise, you can wind up sick, hurt or dead. My son and his girlfriend were lucky they weren't exposed to the cold weather longer than they were.

There are ways to be prepared and be safe in case something like this would happen again. There are items you can have in your trunk or back seat to prepare for the cold weather. In order to make a "winter emergency vehicle kit'.

18 Items To Prepare For Winter Emergencies

18 Items To Prepare For Winter Emergencies
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Keep your vehicle stocked full of gas. Or at least half way before traveling.
2. Battery powered flashlight with extra batteries. You may need this if it is dark out. Or if you need to look down into the engine to fix it.
3. Booster cables to help restart the engine if possible.
4. Warm blanket or two, depending on how many people you have in your vehicle. As you can cuddle in a blanket to stay warm. If a vehicle will not start back up.
5. A first aid kit with manual. To take care of small cuts, or other injuries while waiting on ambulance.
6. Fire extinguisher, in case the vehicle would catch fire.
7. Spare tire with tools to change it.
8. Tire pump kit, in case, of a flat tire.
9. Map of the area you are traveling in. In case you need to walk to get help or to give directions to the tow truck or emergency vehicles.
10. Snow brush or scrap. Preferably one with both.
11. Windshield fluid, non-freezing kind.
 12. Winter boots or coats. This will help be prepared in case an accident happens. If my son and his girlfriend would have had these. They would have been shielded from the cold better til help arrived.
13. A bag of salt, sand or kitty litter. To help with traction if stuck in the snow or mud. Or use the vehicles mats if they have any.
14. Extra non-perishable food and water. Depending on where you are traveling and the weather, it can take awhile for the emergency vehicles to show up. Such as being stuck in a blizzard. You would have to stay put in the vehicle and wait it out. Or if someone was injured and couldn't travel.
15. Battery powered radio. It is way, to be able to keep updated on the weather. In case you are waiting on emergency services due to a blizzard or other storm. Plus, keep you occupied til help arrives.
16. Matches, disposable lighters, and candles - To light flares or help keep warm. Small candles can be placed in a vehicle to help keep the inside warm.
17. Tow chain or rope. In case someone stops to help and doesn't have one.
18. Solar powered bank to keep your phone charged. That way you can call and keep in contact with emergency services.
Knowing and being prepared is half the battle. As if a sudden winter storm, blizzard or tornado happens. Emergency personnel can't go out in the weather unless it is safe for them, being clear, or lessen. You may have to wait things out till help can arrive.
Mournful Sphinx Moth - Wordless Wednesday
Mournful Sphinx Moth
For this week's edition of Wordless Wednesday, I am sharing a few photos of the "Mournful Sphinx Moth". This moth looks like an airplane.
Mournful Sphinx Moth
This photo is a little blurry. It is the best I could trying to get a different view. Even at a different view this month still looks like your looking at a miniature airplane.
Mournful Sphinx Moth
From this view, you can see the moth has a little hump like feature. Which reminds you more of a fish out of the water.
Mournful Sphinx Moth
This moth was found and photographed in Southern Texas. It was seen in gray, dark brown and light brown in color.
Important Dog Food Recall - Evanger's Hunk Of Beef Dog Food
Have you heard there has been another dog food recall? Oh! This time it is Evanger's Big Hunk Dog Food. That can be bought in cans.
Evanger's is recalling three different types of it's canned pet food.  One comes in a 12 ounce can under the #776155, a second one is Evanger's flavor braised beef under the #776150, the third and last flavor is the Against The Grain Pulled Beef under the number #776107.
The sad part is these have been made between December 2015 and last month January 2017. That is a long to go back on a recall if you think about how many pets have eaten that and have gotten sick or worse yet, died from eating it. This recall should have been sooner. As the expiration dates on the can are between December 2019 and January 2021.
Somehow there was a deadly drug that came in contact with and contamiated the dog food called pentobarbital. Once Evanger's found out, they issued a voluntary recall. As these products were issued nationwide.
If you didn't know "pentobarbital" can affect your pet in several ways.
1. Losing balance
2. Nausea
3. Dizziness
4. Drowsiness
5. Excitement
6. Or in extreme cases death
One recall is too many when it comes to our furry loved ones. I don't know about you nut, my furries are a part of my family. They are my babies. I would lose it if one died because I thought I was feeding them good food. These companies need to be held accountable for being irresponsible in placing rotten ingredients or other harmful things in our pets foods. Remember to always report any issues you may have. That way a massive recall can be put out to the world.
What do you do if you have some of these tainted cans of dog food?
Take the product back where you bought them to get a full refund. The retailers will ship them back to the distributors to be disposed of in the proper manner.
If you choose to throw wit away yourself, please make sure to place it in a properly enclosed glass jar or metal can with a lid that can't be removed by a pet. That way no pet can tear the trash bag open and eat the contamination stuff.
Do not put it out for the neighborhood pets you wish to stay off your lawn. As other wildlife can get to it this way and be affected as well. Please dispose of it properly.
You can always call the company number at 847-537-0102 if you have any questions or inquiries.
Any U.S. citizen can report complaints to a number to their local area coordinator.  Make sure to read 'How To Report A Pet Food Problem' that way you are sure to reach the proper channels if you haven't so already.
Weekend Follow Up #4 - Influenza is not to be messed with
Weekend follow up header
This is a follow up of all the blog posts I have created for the past week in case you missed one. I would like to do this weekly. I write on a variety of subjects. As I have two places I currently write at. Obviously, one place is on this blog Rusty2rusty's Chatter. Second place is my blog called Food With A Plan.
***************
A bunch of medicines from Pixabay.com
This past week I have not been feeling good. I started out with wheezing whenever I laid down. It was hard to get any sleep because of this. The past two days the other symptoms slowly started coming.
1. Coughing
2. Fever
3. Exhaustion
4. Muscle Aches
5. Wheezing or difficulty breathing
6. Sneezing
7. Loss of appetite
8. Headache
9. Nasal congestion
10. Ear pain
I went to the hospital this morning. As this was day three and I felt worse than the day before. I was not suffering from the common cold. I am suffering from influenza. Also known as the flu. The doc ordered x-rays of my chest. I was given a breathing treatment at the hospital. I was sent home with steroids and more breathing treatments to continue at home.
Influenza is not something to be messed with. If you start having these symptoms, especially difficulty breathing. Please get to a doctor. As the flu has and does kill people.
This is not how I had my morning planned. I had planned on going to church. Afterward having a second meeting with the preacher about my upcoming nuptials. As last week the preacher gave my fiance' and I homework to write out at home. We both were to write what the definition of love means to us individually, not what we think the other person thinks or believes. But what I believe love to be. As the preacher was going to discuss what we both wrote til we both have the same idea of what love is.
I took the time to write my answer out on notebook paper. Me being a blogger I could not give a simple answer. I wrote a whole page full. I wanted to write more. Instead, I kept it short and hope he understands what I mean love to be.
Now to the Weekend Follow Up from
February 19th to February 25th
1. 3 Important Things To Have On Your Blog - I stress three most important things I believe all blogs should have and why.
Pizza Crust made from cauliflower
2. Homemade Cauliflower Pizza - I was placed on a 1800 calorie diet by my doctor. Plus, being a type 2 diabetic I wanted to try a healthier pizza crust. I choose to make the crust out of cauliflower.
Rascal, a Chihuahua wired terrier mix.
3. Photo Session With Rascal For Wordless Wednesday - A blog full of pictures with captions of Rascal. Oh and a photo bomb from Moose, the Chug.
4. Revival, Church Service And A Talk With The Preacher - I share my thoughts about a local revival held at a local church, the morning church service and the talk with the preacher about my upcoming nuptials.
That's it for the week. As you can tell I really did not feel good. As I only wrote four blog posts compared to as many as I normally do. Hopefully, with my medicine, I can step up my game this week.
I hope you enjoyed my fourth "Weekend Follow Up" post. I invite all my readers to leave your latest blog post link in the comments with a short description. 3 Important Things To Have On Your Blog
I read many blogs a day. I read more when I do not feel good enough to create blog posts of my own. I will spend time in bed on my tablet reading blogs. If I comment on them. I will share them. As I believe bloggers should help support and encourage one another. Not compete against each other. As I believe there is room for all of us. There are three things I believe every good blog should have.
Share Buttons
Share buttons are important for those who wish to share your blog post and get the word out. I came across a blog about a cream medicine for cancer that kills dogs within hours of digesting it. The blog had no share buttons. I had no way to share the news through social media to get the word out to my fellow animal lover friends. I support fellow bloggers by sharing their blogs through social media. If no share button. I read, maybe comment and move on.
Follow button
It is important to have a way for readers to follow through email. I follow many blogs of my friends. A few don't have a follow button. I never know when they create a new post. Unless they tag me or I happen to visit a Facebook group we are in together. As I check my email every day for the blogs I follow. Some blogs I enjoy reading but will not hunt them down to find them. If I do not have easy access to read them. That blog lost another valuable reader.
Comment Or Contact
It's important to have a way to contact the blogger if they do not allow comments. As readers may have a question about something written or something the blogger is selling. If there is no way to contact the blog author, they should allow comments for the same reason stated already.
If you are a blogger and do not have one of these three things. may I ask why you don't? If you are a reader of blogs, what is something you expect to see on a blog that some lack?
