It is Important To Know What Drives Your Dogs

Rascal is always grabbing the balls when I throw them. Sometimes he will play fetch. Other time he runs off with them. Then proceeds to sit and guard by them from my other dog, Moose. As you can tell by the photograph, Rascal is hard on his toys. I have to keep a nice supply. Otherwise they all end up like the ball in the photograph.

One ball I noticed that seems to last a little longer than most, is the brand name KONG. Which you can buy in many different shapes, sizes and materials.

Moose knows how to tree squirrels. He will bark until he gets a treat. To let me know he has another squirrel in a tree. This helps him get his natural drive out in play without driving my neighbors and the city squirrels in a frenzy from all the barking.

It really helps to know your dog's breed. Even if they are mixed breeds like my dogs. As the breed information can tell you what drives your dog to do the things he or she does. Knowing this information leads to a happy dog.

Both of my dogs are Chihuahua mixes. Which are known to burrow themselves under blankets, pillows etc. taking their toys with them. This explains a lot about the behavior Rascal displays with his toys and balls.

Many small breed dogs were bred to help hunt or chase other animals. Such as : rats, birds, squirrels and more. Back in earlier times when cities had a rodent problem. Small dogs were trained to keep the rodents out of the kitchen. Which would explain my dogs drive to chase small animals. Such as squirrels.

I no longer have to fight my teenagers for the one bathroom everyone shares. as they try to take a selfie in front of the bathroom mirror.

Month Of January 2016 Gratitude

Gratitude : Something I am thankful for. I am going to write down every day something I am thankful for and why. It will help me write something positive each day.

Gratitude 1 : I am thankful for my grandson. Even if he wears me out. He is always full of smiles and giggles. He loves to make people laugh.

Gratitude 2 : I am thankful I have  a boyfriend who puts up with my hormonal attitude while doing everything he can to help me.

Gratitude 3 : I am thankful to wake up and see another day.

Gratitude day 4 : Even though we have our differences. Plus, I was not raised by her. I am thankful for my mother.

Gratitude day 5 : I am thankful for my two dogs. They are a great source of company. when I do not feel well, they stick near my side. If I am in bed all day. They are with me. 

Gratitude day 6 : I am thankful my boyfriend tells me every day he loves and I am beautiful no matter what I look like. He is an amazing man.

Gratitude day 7 : I am thankful my daughter gets special help for her learning issues.

Green Smoothies Book Review

I received a book called "Green Smoothies" by Fern Green from the website "Blogging For Books". It contains 66 recipes of juices, smoothies, nut milks, and tonics and a 7-day detox plan.

I find the book well written and easy to follow directions. If you are looking to self cleanse or kick start your metabolism this will be a great book to start with.

I recognize many of the ingredients. Some I did not. Such as : radicchio. Do you know what it is? Is it like a radish? As I would love to try the recipe 'dandelion tonic' with radicchio. As it claims to clean your vital organs as well as giving the skin a little extra boost.

The one I am keeping in mind the one to help fight flu symptoms. Which has : agave nectar, cayenne pepper, garlic, ginger and a lemon. If you want to know how much and the ingredient I left out. You will have to get the book and read for yourself.

If I had to rate this book on a scale from 1 to 5. 5 being the highest. I would rate this book a 5.

Blue Buffalo Pet Food Class Action Suit

The dog food company has agreed to pay out 32 million dollars in order to settle that it falsely claimed their products were free of poultry by products, wheat soy, corn, and artificial preservatives

The 13 lawsuits that claim there is ingredients found through an investigation. One lawsuit claims they paid higher prices for the dog food. As they were mislead by false advertisements that Blue Buffalo was a quality choice compared to other marketed brands. 

Blue Buffalo stands by it's labels and denies doing anything wrong. They have agreed to the settlement to avoid further litigation.

Class Actions members includes Americans who purchased products between May 2008 and December 18. 2015. You can claim from $5 up to $200 depending if you have proof or not of purchase. It can take up to seven years for payout.

Forepets WhistCall Review

Today, I received in the mail a WhistCall made by forePets. I have been looking forward to receiving this product. As I have two small to medium size dogs. Sometimes they listen. Sometimes they don't. I have  a fenced in backyard. So, it isn't to big of  a deal. However, I want to be able to take both out in public on a leash. Since, I can't whistle. I thought of trying this product out to see if it can help me train my dog better. Plus, one dog is smaller than the other one. I do not want the larger dog pulling the small dog everywhere. As it could injure him.

I got the product out of the package. It comes with a strap like necklace that you can place around your neck.  I found it to be a big help when training my dogs. The strap is soft, black in color with product name with a picture of a dog in white. Which is attached to the whistle with a little clip. The whistle feels like it all metal with a light black plastic piece attached. It is light weight and easy to use. 

I blew in to it to see how loud it was. It was not a real loud sound or high pitch. Both of my dogs perked up and looked my way. So, I decided to let the dogs out back. I wanted to call them back in with the whistle. Regardless if they were ready to come in or not. I blew the whistle. Both dogs came running. I gave them a small treat.

The product claims to be the perfect dog training tool. where you can take control of your pet, let them know who really is in charge at all times. You can eliminate unwanted behaviors. Such as stopping incessant barking. While you teach commands and response skills to your dog. 

From the little use I have tried with the WhistCall. It is working. I plan to work more with my dogs. I add an update to this post in a few weeks. So far, they are looking good.

Update : I have been using the forepets WhistCall for the past several weeks. My dogs will come when I blow the whistle to call them. They will instantly stop any behavior. As soon as I blow the whistle. I am no longer the loud neighbor yelling at her dogs to shut up all the time. This product works great as long as I keep up my part of the training. 

If I had to rate this product on a scale from 1 to 5. 5 being the highest rated. I would rate this product a 5. As it does exactly what it claims. I would and do recommend this product to anyone wanting to train their pets.

Train Your Dog What To Do When It Gets Scared

Earlier today, I had to take my puppy to the vet. As he was hurt last night. While the vet was checking him out. He noticed Rascal moving closer to me. However, he allowed the vet to touch him. As long as he was touching me.

I spoke with the vet of how I trained my puppy to run to me when he was scared. I explained I know some dogs have a habit of darting off in the opposite direction of their owner when they get scared. I taught my pup to run to me when he is scared. That way if we were in a social situation and he got scared. My pup would look for to run to. Instead of darting off in some unknown direction and get lost.

The vet told me I did a good thing by doing that. As many dogs will dart away from the direction that scared them. It could be a loud sound. Such as : fireworks, vehicle backfiring, or a loud boom. Which could cause them to dart into the road and get hit. When the dogs run like that. They tend to get lost. Some find their way home. Others never do.

I do not know if you can train an older dog or a rescue to run to it's owner when it gets scared. However, I know it works for a puppy. As my Rascal is living proof. He is not the only dog I have trained this way. I have a fenced in backyard. It was easy to work with both my dogs out in the fenced in backyard. To see how they would react to something that would scare them. To train them to search me out when they get scared.

It's funny how many people would tell me I am making a mistake and babying my pup by teaching it to run to me when it is scared or hurt. Seems like I figured something out that could save his life. Plus, any heartache I would feel if he was hurt or lost.
